In U.S. culture and law, inciting violence is the line between permissible free speech and an unlawful violent act. Freedom requires an open discussion of ideas; and in the extreme it allows for the spreading of hatred and ridicule of other religions and nations.

Any question beginning with "should" indicates a moral question, and not a religious one. Nevertheless, no one should be free to spread hatred, or incite violence for any reason. There is a well-known anecdote illustrating this: freedom of speech is an important human right, but yelling "fire" in a crowded movie house would not be protected under this right.

In Islam, jihad is usually translated to English as "holy war"; yet the greatest form of jihad is fighting the evil within our own selves (such as racist thoughts or other things that are evil in our hearts and minds).

The Quran teaches: If someone kills a human being, it is as if he has killed the whole of humanity. And if someone saves a life, it is as if he saves all of humanity. And Y'shua is quoted in the New Testament as saying "Whatsoever you do to the least, you do unto Me".

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is quoted as saying, "All people of the world are members of the family of God. The best one is the one who goes out of his way to help everyone with love, respect, and honour." There are similar sayings present in the New Testament as well. Using Muslim and Christian examples seem to fit the times we are in today, yet these are universal beliefs found in most all religions.

Therefore, with regard to religions, and people who incite hatred and violence, any religion which advocates this ought to be outlawed. The purpose of religion is to guide people in their spiritual lives -- and it can be easily argued that no legitimate religion would advocate negativity against others. However, because no religion's history is exempt from hatred and violence, if you follow this logic to its conclusion, religion has never been purely applied.

People who ridicule other religions or nations may believe they are doing so based on either subjective comparison or objective logic that the religion or nation makes no sense. It's important to be able to challenge false religions and corrupt nations based on good sense, but we also should be sensitive not to ridicule the inhabitants thereof: they may be without choice, or their ignorance may preclude them from seeing your point of view.
