When I am cycling a tank, fresh or salt, I do not change the water. I maintain the water level (and the salinity), but I never change it. The goal is to let the bacteria build up and eat the bad stuff, so physically removing the bad stuff will only delay the cycling process.

How many pH drops do you put in your saltwater aquarium?

I would not advise messing with the pH in a salt water (marine) aquarium. If you follow the directions on the particular testing kit that you have you should be OK but messing around with pH is a very dangerous thing to do and may quickly and easily result in dead fish.

What temperature should a saltwater aquarium be?

A constant, appropriate water temperature is vital to keeping your aquarium's inhabitants healthy. A sudden temperature change can place undue stress on your aquatic life, increasing their susceptibility to infection and disease. A saltwater marine aquarium should be heated to around 72-82oF which equates to 22-28oC. The most sought after Marine fish such as clownfish, angels, damsels, goby's, dartfish etc as well as invertebrates such as crab's, starfish and shrimp are to be kept in water with the temperature between 72-78oF (22-25.5oC) which is worth bearing in mind when selecting the desired temperature for your tank.

What type of water should be used in preparing a new aquarium?

To determine the type of water to use in your aquarium first decide which fish and livestock you want to keep. Most people start with a freshwater aquarium housing community fish. The water used to set up this type of aquarium is usually drawn from a sink in your home which is normally either municipal or well water. Municipal water typically contains chlorine or chloramines that must be removed or neutralized before fish can be added. Water conditioners are available from pet and aquarium stores. Well water should work straight from the sink but it may be best to take a sample of water to an aquarium store for testing. If you would like to set up a saltwater fish aquarium you can use municipal water, water drawn from a well, or filtered water such as reverse osmosis or reverse osmosis with deionization. When setting up reef aquariums with saltwater fish, invertebrates, and corals, most hobbyists use filtered water because impurities such as phosphates and nitrates which are food for nuisance algae have been removed.
