If it is the 4.0L EFI V6 engine ( like my 1995 Ford Explorer ) it has an " O " ring
for the thermostat , there is no gasket
But , if it is the 3.0L V6 engine I believe a thermostat gasket is used
HDPE pipe can use a rubber ring, if the rubber ring is properly sealed with a steel gasket. The rubber ring must be placed in a groove in the pipe and then the steel gasket is placed on top of it.
I tihnk it could be a head gasket but that's just me. The hed gasket's are placed uders they heads.

NO! never! lubrication of any tensioner belts will eventuall cause corrosion/deteriation of the material then snap. No liquid of any kind should be placed on the belt. Of course water may happen to get on it from time to time pending on what you are doing but that's not bad.
