Yes, but only in moderation.

Our bodies make sugar naturally, however that is not to say that we can stop eating sugar. It is not wise to take sugar out of your diet as those are needed to help regulate the vitamins and nutrients in your system. You just have to eat sugar in moderation.

Actually Diabetes happens when your body does not produce enough or doesn't respond properly to the insulin that your body already makes. So in a sense yes not eating enough sugar can lead to diabetes as you are depriving your body of something that it needs.

So to answer those that say that sugar has negative effects on the human body, I would have to call them out on that as it isn't true, however certain sugars should not be ingested on aregular basis. But yes, you need sugar to stay healthy.

Sweet tastes are essential to balance! We humans both enjoy and need things that taste sweet and should not feel guilty when we have a desire for them.

Sweet Is Essential

You need sweet foods to maintain your health. Foods like fruits, sweet vegetables and grains all contain natural sugars that feed the friendly microflora in your gut and help them grow. But the key here is do you have an abundance of healthy microflora living inside your intestines? If so, they will eat the sugar in these foods made by Mother Nature while you enjoy the sweet taste. But without sugar, like in type 1 diabetes, you need something like a brownie or a lollipop to survive.

Six Tastes for Balanced Eating

For thousands of years practitioners of Ancient Ayurvedic wisdom understood that we need six tastes in our daily meals to maintain balanced health. Sweet as well as sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent are not only pleasing, they are also healthy.

Ancient Ayurvedic tradition is a holistic system of medicine from India, teaches that an imbalance of one of the tastes can contribute to illness, but you can also treat disease and illness by bringing the six tastes back into balance in your diet.

Sweet Treats

It's liberating to know that it is okay to give in to your sweet cravings and that the sweet taste is essential to good health.

Sugar, like fat, gets a lot of sour press, some deserved, some not. Babies are born with a sweet tooth. Human milk is quite sweet, so a child begins life making the connection between eating, drinking, and pleasure. Sugars are one form of carbohydrates and carbohydrates are good for you, as long as you eat the right kinds in the right amounts. Carbohydrates are your body's main source of energy. You couldn't live or work without them. Your body needs a lot of carbohydrates - around 60 to 70 percent of your total calories should be in the form of carbs. But before you reach for the carbs in a candy bar, take some time to learn about sugar and other kinds of carbs. Over-processed, factory-made sugars and starches have given carbohydrates a bad reputation. Once you understand which carbs are best for your body, including which sugars are good for you, you can indulge a sweet tooth and still enjoy sweet health.

Nutritionally speaking, there is no such thing as a bad sugar, since all digestible sugars provide energy to the body. It doesn't matter to an individual cell whether the glucose it is using for fuel entered the body as a starch or as a sugar. Yet, simple and complex carbohydrates behave differently in the body and are part of different nutritional packages. The best carbs are those that not only provide a steady supply of energy, but also bring other nutrients the body needs.

Fructose sugars are simple monosaccharides rather than complex carbohydrates. They come in packages that contain important nutrients and fiber. Sugars provide quick energy, but do not excite the blood sugar roller coaster because the fiber slows absorption of the sugars. Unlike the simple sugar glucose that quickly enters the bloodstream, fructose sugar has to go to the liver before it is released into the bloodstream and carried to the body's cells. Since fructose is the preferred source of glycogens (sugars stored in the liver), it is a valuable energy food before and after long periods of exercise.
