If you have a GSM mobile phone, you should save your contacts' phone numbers with the country code. The mobile system will automatically substitute the appropriate prefix, even if you are roaming internationally. For example, to call a number in London, England, you would dial 020 within the UK, 00 44 20 from many countries, 011 44 20 from the US or Canada, 010 44 20 from Japan, 0011 44 20 from Australia, or 810 44 20 from Russia, and there are many other variations. Just be sure to include the plus sign so that the mobile knows it's a number in international format.

On a non-GSM mobile phone, you may or may not be able to enter numbers in international format. If you can, you should.

(The plus sign means "insert your international access prefix here." From a GSM mobile phone, you can enter the number in full international format, starting with the plus sign. The most common prefix is 00, but North America (USA, Canada, etc.) uses 011, and many other countries use different prefixes.)
