This is completely up to the person who has cancer. There are many answers to this question and, again, it is what is right for the individual with cancer.
I hope this puts a few options into perspective.
1. Tell your friends at the early signs of cancer because you are the type that needs support and likes to be surrounded by concerned loved ones during tough times.
the positive: this need will be fulfilled.
the negative: Your friends will be saddened by the news and some will be a little uncomfortable around you. Remember, cancer is a very serious subject matter and a lot of people don't know how to handle the news that somebody they know is suffering from this disease. The result of this will be uncomfortable unnatural conversations with some of your friends, as they do not know what to say. Some may even treat you differently; like a "sick person"
2. only tell those very close to you. like a sibling, or parent, parental figure, spouse, but leave acquaintances out of it. Especially at the early stages.
This method will allow you to get the support you need from those very close to you but at the same time keep the information from acquaintances: Do you really want to be treated differently?
If (God forbid) the cancer takes a turn for the worst they will all find out in due time. But many people are beating cancer, so why be treated like you are on your death bed if your treatment is successful? It is bad for your moral.
3. Do not tell anybody and suffer alone. Research online (which will most likely scare you) and call health hotlines. This is a very hard burden to carry alone. If you do not want to tell your friends I recommend you look into a support group.
Just know that cancer is not a death sentence and it can be beat.
