where the upper rad hose meets the engine
Follow the top of the water pump hose. at the end of the hose you will see a houseing with two bolts that hold the therostat. clean both surfaces of dirt,old gasget. A flat putty knife is good for this, be careful not to cut into the metal, replace therostat and seal it helps to use a high temp sealent on both sides of the metal before installing the gasget. p.s. be sure to put the therostat in the way you took it out. Run engine and replace anti-freeze.
Look for your two heater core hoses that come out of the firewall. Trace the one that goes into the top of the engine and may be next to where the therostat is. That is the hose that you would want to cut in half and install the T fitting that you get with the flush kit. This way you can back flush your system.
If it is the pressure line use the appropriate flare nut wrench to loosen and remove the flare fittings, then pull the old hose out and install the new hose. The return hose often uses a hose clamp, loosen the clamp enough to remove the hose then install the new hose and tighten the clamps.
I'm not sure about the S, but in the 2002 with just the 2.5L the therostat is in the lower radiator hose. Mine went out at about 90K miles and I had the same question.
It is some times easer to change the theromstat at the same time to save repete work on a higher milage car. it is a cheap part.
It is at the engine end of the top radiator hose. Remove the hose and the 2 retaining bolts and remove the housing and thermostat. Clean both surfaces and install thr thermostat.jd

lossen the hose clamp on both ends of the hose. pull the old hose off then install new hose and 2 cllamps again
If you stand in front of your van and follow the hose on the left side of radiator- you will see another hose shaped like a C. At the bottom of that second hose is a silver therostat housing with four bolts in it. You have to empty the antifreeze and take off the two hoses to get to the housing. Rachets work best with a two inch long 12 metric fitting. Hope this is helpful.
Drain the coolant, unclamp the old hose, remove the old hose, install the new hose, clamp the new hose in, fill up the coolant.
just follow the hose off the radiator that goes into your engine block. its on the front of the motor. you just loosen the 2 bolts that hold the hose on and its right there. very simple
