In reality, what really happend was the commencment of OPEN WARFARE between the US and North Vietnam after the Tonkin Gulf Incident & the transitions from a guerrilla war into a conventional war in South Vietnam with the introduction of REGULAR combat troops. Regular combat troops are CONVENTIONAL forces...that title should have given away the answer right there.
