We Sikhs believe in preserving everything that God has gifted us with. You see, there has to be a reason for everything that God has done on this earth irrespective of whether we understand that reason or not.Sikhs do not cut or trim even a single strand of hair right from the time that they are born until the time that they pass away. This is because they feel that it is just a very small and harmless way of appreciating God's vast and unthinkable creation and they believe this to be an act of paying respect to the almighty.

However, despite our efforts to maintain our hair, there also arises a question of personal comfort and this is one of the reasons why some Sikhs trim their beard and moustache although it is forbidden in our religion. As a brief insight to Sikhism,i can tell you that there are five basic things that a true Sikh should carry with himself throughout his lifetime. The five things are -

  1. Kangha - A small comb which is used to keep the hair neat and intact.
  2. Kara - A steel bangle which is believed to prevent you from thinking wrong thoughts.
  3. Kachchha - A pair of shorts
  4. Kirpan - A dagger which may give you the strength to fight injustice.
  5. Kesh - The Hindi word for hair.

Another reason why Sikhs keep their hair has a historical background to it.At the time of mughal rule in India, when Aurangzeb came into power,he began to forcefully convert hindus into following Islam.During this time, our tenth Guru(Guru Gobind Singhji),founded the Sikh religion which stood up against the atrocities commited by Aurangzeb. The name given to our religion was "Khalsa" which means, one who is pure of heart. In order to give an image to the people belonging to the Khalsa religion, our Guru ordered us from cutting our hair. This also helped Sikhs of those times to be able to recognize each other when they were at war with the Mughal army. This legacy was carried on even after the death of Guru Gobind Singhji and that is how keeping our hair came to be known as one of the customs followed in our religion.

1. In Sikhism, it is forbidden to trim hair from any part of the body (including Beard). It was an order of the Sikh's Tenth Master, Guru Gobind Singh to follow the 5K's(5 Mandatory Rules), and untrimmed Hair & Beard is one those. Moreover, Sikhs believe in Physical & Spiritual Purity.

2. Sikhism believes that hair is the part of created human. Therefore, cutting hair from any part of the body, both for male and female mean altering the way God created us, therefore Sikh men don't cut their beard.

Sikh men have long hair, called 'Kes'. They have long hair because they are commited to God and they believe we should keep the natural form that God created us with. We shouldn't change the ways God made us to be.

With regards to keeping hair, do consider that once shaven hair grows back quicker and coarser proving the following point. Essentially, why cut it in the first place if it grows back? Thus god wants it there so we are not to change the way god wants us to look.

Waheguru(God) is the all-knowing, all mighty so however he has made you at birth it's best to maintain ones self that way.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji said in 1699 "Hair is the emblem of the Indian Ascetic. You will be soldier saints." Also, the Sikhs have 5 emblems of a true Sikh Kes(Hair), Kanga(comb), Kara(steel bracelet), Kachha(underwear), Kirpan(sword). The five K's remind each Sikh that he or she belongs to Waheguru(God) who is the protector. Now named by their Guru as Singh (lion), he will fear none and fight tyranny and injustice with all his might.

Sikhs don't cut their hair as they consider hair to be the part of the creation when God created humans (men/women).Cutting of hair would mean to alter the way God created us.

Further more, saints and sages of all times have kept their hairs long or uncut, that itself signify the importance of hair.

Also, it is essential to consider that once one does remove hair with a doubt it will grow back. Thus proving that god wants it there in accordance to how he wants human men and women to look like

Sikh women don't cut their hair either! The Sikhs believe that god wanted us to have hair the certain length we have it without cutting it. If god wanted us to have short hair, he simply would've given us hair that length in the first place.

The meaning of long hair for men and women in the Sikh community is that they believe God had wanted their hair to be a certain length, that's why God made their hair grow to that length so they don't want to cut it as if God had wanted it to be short, they would have had short hair when they grew up.

What religion do men don't cut their hair?

Sikhism :) Answer I am sorry to the first answerer, but Sikh's are allowed to cut their hair. My chemist is a Sikh and he has short hair, as does a resteraunt owner who is also Sikh. As a point of interest the Taliban forced all women to wear the burka. This is not in there scriptures but is the choice of the woman if she follows the teaching of what it says in the bible. Up until the 50's Christian women never went to church without wearing a hat, a remnant of the above statement.
