Monocotyledons have one seed leaf and Dicotyledons have two seed leaves.

If you think of how most seeds grow with two little starter leaves, they are dicots, as opposed to grass for instance, which only has one little leaf at the start.

The characters which distinguish the classes.Despite the problems in recognizing basal angiosperm taxa, the standard distinctions between dicots and monocots are still quite useful. It must be pointed out, however, that there are many exceptions to these characters in both groups, and that no single character in the list below will infallibly identify a flowering plant as a monocot or dicot.

The table summarizes the major morphological differences between monocots and dicots; each character is dicussed in more detail below.MONOCOTSDICOTSEmbryo with single cotyledonEmbryo with two cotyledonsPollen with single furrow or porePollen with three furrows or poresFlower parts in multiples of threeFlower parts in multiples of four or fiveMajor leaf veins parallelMajor leaf veins reticulatedStem vacular bundles scatteredStem vascular bundles in a ringRoots are adventitiousRoots develop from radicleSecondary growth absentSecondary growth often present

Monocotyledons and dicotyledons are similar in that they are both flowers.

There are a several differences between monocots and dicots but one of the more prominent is monocotyledons have one unified seed, while dicotyledons have two part seeds -- mono meaning one and di meaning two. Another difference is the number of petals their flowers have.
