A domestic dog is one that is bred and raised in captivity to live in the world of humans. Pets are domestic dogs, as are police dogs and others trained to work for humans.

Police dogs are owned by police departments and are specially trained to assist in police work. Some work in apprehending suspects while others work in detecting things like drugs or bombs.

Wild dogs are those who descend from dogs who have been abandoned or lost. They live as scavengers on the outskirts of human civilization. Some subsist on garbage and others kill pets or live stock to survive.

Quote: "A police dog is simply a specially trained domestic dog.

Wild dogs come in two varieties: wolves and feral domestic dogs (which are domestic dogs that have developed packs outside of human society and act wild).

Currently, scientists do not consider wolves and dogs to be different species but rather different subspecies."

The person who wrote this is not a scientist certainly not one who can make a general staement like this.

The difference is many years of selective breeding for specific abilities. Dogs with certain personalities, certain bodies, smelling capabilites etc. have been chosen to be used as police dogs. Wild dogs have lived because of the "survival of the fittest". Wild dogs and police dogs have different attributes but the way they have developed is entirely different.

All wolves and dogs are part of the same species: canis lupus. There are a few minor differences between wolves (canis lupus lupus) and domestic dogs (canis lupus familiaris); wild dogs are simply domestic dogs that are living outside of human society. They are also called feral dogs.
