hard wood is grown in cold wet places, and soft woods are grown in warm driy places

The above is TOTALLY incorrect. The place grown has nothing to do with it. Softwoods are trees that drop their seeds in cones (coniferous trees). Hardwood seeds all grow within a protective shell or fruit.
