The "Bonnie Blue" flag as we know it was first used on September 11, 1810 signifying the Republic of West Florida when the Spanish governor of that region east of the Mississippi River was captured in the fort at Baton Rouge. West Virginia and north stayed in union. This was a tricky one. California did stay in the union.
