With the hammer in the full down position look just to the left of where the hammer rests against the firing pin. You may need to open the action to read the entire number as it may obscure the last digit(s).
Serial number 617,xxx Springfield model 1903 rifle was made in 1915 (1915 serial numbers were 595,601 to 660,121), the cartridge is a 30-06 Springfield (M1906). The original cartridge for the '03 was the 30-03 (.30 caliber, designed in 1903 and used a 220 grain bullet). In 1906 the army adopted the spitzer style bullet, reducing the weight of the bullet to 150 grains; the new cartridge became the 30-06. All '03's after 1906 were made for the 30-06. Note: The Springfield model 1903 rifle with serial numbers under 800,000 might have been made with improper heat treatment of the receiver (refered to as low numbers) and could shatter under firing pressure, causing injury.
The US Rifle Model 1903 is a very collectable firearm in its original condition. However, we cannot appraise a firearm without knowing the condition. They are typically $600 to $1,200 if they have not been altered from their military configuration. Please note that your rifle is an "early" Springfield, made long before 1918. There WAS a problem with the heat treatment of the receivers (frames) for SOME of the Springfield M1903 rifles made before February 1918. Firing any Springfield rifle below serial number 800,000 can expose the shooter to serious injury or death, and is NOT recommended.
BATF has no guideline. The U.S. Arsenals at Rock Island and Springfield did. Go to odcmp.com, click on sales ,click on 1903 , read and enjoy.
when the percussion design came to being many flintlock rifles by Springfield and other makers were converted to percussion also to use in the civil war...............
