The last state to officially secede was North Carolina, but the voters in Tennessee did not approve that state's secession until after North Carolina had declared with the Confederacy. There were also pro-Confederate governmental groups active in Missouri and Kentucky, and in the territory of New Mexico.

Georgia was the last Southeastern state to return to the Union after the Civil War in July of 1870. The first such state was Tennessee, four years earlier.

The last significant battle in Mississippi was near Tupelo and Harrisburg and was a significant victory for the Union.

Kansas joined the union a few months prior to the beginning of the Civil War. Kansas was admitted into the Union on January 29, 1861 becoming the 34th state to join the Union.

The last state to secede from the Union was Texas. On February 1, 1861, Texas officially declared its secession from the United States, joining the Confederate States of America. However, after the end of the Civil War, Texas was readmitted to the Union on March 30, 1870.
Tennessee was the last state to secede from the Union. It was also the first to rejoin.
The last Union Civil War veteran to pass away was Albert Woolson. He died on August 2, 1956 at the age of 109.
