If you are still driving the car, you need to make arrangements in all honesty to pay off the loan, even at the rate you can afford. If another collections company is trying to collect, then the clock is reset with any payment you make, which would be a mistake on your part. In that case, the original company sold the unpaid loan and has already written off the bad debt. So, I guess finding out who is trying to collect would be the first step toward solving the dilemma.
