Lift works because of a different pressure distribution over the surface of the wing. The pressure on the top of the wing is lower than at the bottom of the wing (since the flow may be faster over the top and the wing camber (shape) is such) and therefore the aircraft is lifted up by the force acting on the bottom of the wing.Considering Newtons 3rd law - the wing exerts a force on the air, pushing the flow downward. From Newton's third law, the equal and opposite reaction produces a lift. So the force keeping up the aircraft is applied by the air.Source - 2nd Year Aero Engineering Student
