It is not 'brahams' but 'brahmana', commonly spelled as 'brahmin'. Brahmins were entrusted the job of studying, teaching, and preserving the scriptures.
When the Aryans arrived in India with their four-fold division of society, there were already a huge class of local priests in the pre-Aryan Indian society. In the assimilation of Aryans in Hindu society, these priests were also included among the brahmins. Perhaps the Aryan priests are termed as Saraswatas, residing in the region of the now extinct River Saraswati, that is where the Aryans first stayed before migrating to other regions of India.
