Ancient Greek civilization had a long and illustrious history. Historical and archaeological records indicate that the civilization had its earliest beginnings in the Neolithic Age (6000 B.C.E. and later), although it wasn't until 500 B.C.E. that what we now know as "Classical Greece" took shape. It is customary to mark the end of Ancient Greece in the middle of the 2nd century (B.C.E), when Rome conquered the last remaining centers of resistance among the Greek societies.
The Greek dark age was a period of Greek history that lasted from the Dorian invasion in 1100 BC to the first signs of the Greek poleis which occurred in the 9th century BC. There was a lack of architectural structures built during this time.

Greek civilization is divided into eight periods. First, the Neolithic period lasted from 6000- 2900 BCE. It was followed by the Early Bronze Age which lasted from 2900- 2000 BCE. Then came the Minoan age from 2000- 1400 BCE. Then in 600 BCE, the Mycenaean Age began and it lasted until 1100 BCE, when the Dark Ages started. The Dark Ages ended in 750 BCE with the beginning of the Archaic Period. The Archaic Period was followed by the Classical Period, which began in 500 BCE. And lastly, the Hellenistic period which began in 336 BCE and ended in 146 BC with the dawning of the Roman Empire.

The Golden Age of Greek civilization in the opinion of most ancient history scholars began in the 8th century BC and lasted until the conquest of 99% of the Greek city states by Philip II of Macedonia. This is approximated to be around 350 BC.
