General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson
Chancellorsville
The Confederates under Lee and Stonewall - at the cost of Stonewall's life.
Chancellorsville, where he was wrong-footed by the unbeatable Lee-Jackson partnership - though at the cost of Jackson's life.
This requires a subjective answer. Many military historians cite the Confederate victory at Chancellorsville as the last major Confederate victory. In this three day battle beginning in May, 1862, the battle proved to be a complex three day conflict. The major event that brought victory to General Lee was the successful flank attack on Hooker's army.
Chancellorsville, Virginia, was the location of a major battle of the American Civil War (May 1862). The Union army under Hooker looked as though it would defeat the Confederates underLee. But Lee specialised in wrong-footing his enemy, and Hooker was forced to fight in an unfavourable position. This caused him to lose his nerve, and Stonewall Jackson caught him off-guard. The result was a stunning victory for the Confederates, though it cost Stonewall his life.
Martyrdom can be seen as a Pyrrhic victory in some situations, as the individual may achieve their goal or inspire change through their sacrifice, but at the cost of their own life. The victory is tarnished by the high personal price paid.
