The British believed that English literature was more valuable than literature in antiquity. They believed it was paramount to teach Indians English because their dialects were rude, poor and needed to be enriched. Thomas Macauley believed that once the Indians were taught English literature, they could be used as interpreters between the uneducated masses and the British.
