Laws that are passed in the Senate and House have to go to the President to be signed into law. So, the President can veto a law. However, if the President vetoes a law, it goes back to Congress and will still become a law if 2/3 of Congress votes for it.

Separation of powers is the principle of American government whereby constitutional authority is distributed among three braches of government--the executive, the legislative, and the judicial. Each has their own powers and can check the powers of the other two branches. The Constitution set up each branch in a separate Article of the Constitution. There is also a separation of power among the US states
Legislative - override a veto, impeach presidentExecutive - the Executive Branch is in charge of the administrative aspect of the government. It supervises the operations of the different departments such as Finance, Social Welfare, Defense and others. It has direct control over the local governments units to ensure that the needs of the people are attended to by the public servants.Judicial - decides if laws are constitutional. They use the powers that the Constitution gave them to check up on one another. By this, I mean that for example, the Legislative Branch makes the laws. The Executive Branch enforces the laws. These are both the main responsibilities of these branches. If the Legislative Branch makes a law and then the Executive Branch says that they are not going to enforce it, that is an example of checks and balances.
Another name for the separation of powers that was written into the U.S. Constitution is the system of checks and balances. Dividing power into three government branches (Executive, Legislative, and Judicial) creates a system where each has the ability to keep a "check" on the power of the other two so that one person or group doesn't gain full control of the government.
The power to create laws, that is legislate is the sole power of Congress as enumerated by the United States Constitution. Congress has further enumerated powers to check and balance the executive and judicial branches of government.

The judicial branch has powers to interpret laws, or regulations or other actions of the executive branch, or to declare them unconstitutional. It serves as a "check" on the executive by having the power to interpret the law differently than the executive, and having that interpretation supercede the interpretation of the executive branch. In addition, the judicial branch resolves disputes between the executive branch and citizens or businesses, providing a "check" on any excesses of the executive branch.
