To my understanding the Greek Gods were Humanized Gods
( see the Homeric scriptures )
or Humans Exalted to Godhood
(see the Euhemerus theology).
Every God or Goddess could become or - could be seen as - an avenging God punishing pride and hubris / arrogance of those who -before achieving godhood-
became self-righteous and imposed themselves onto others .
If we take the Epicurean view into consideration of the self-content Gods who do not intervene, the outcome of human actions becomes disastrous for the arrogant.
When the Greek people became Christans.
There are furies in Greek Mythology that played a central role in avenging the tragic death of playwright Ibycus.

Because her favorite Odysseus became arrogant after the greek victory that he declared that it was due to his cunning and own abilities that Troy was finally defeated. Athena ánd the other gods couldn't tolerate arrogance among their subjects.

There is a myth in greek mythology which resembles the one in Old Testament, and it talks about the origin of the first Greek. The story is this: When people became evil and arrogant, Zeus was very angry with them and he wanted to eliminate them. So, he made a great flood, a cataclysm. The only two persons that were saved from this desaster were Deucalion, the son of the Titan Promytheus, and his wife Pyrra, who made an ark and came in. At the end of the cataclysm, the ark stopped at the top of the mountain Parnassos. Deucalion and Pyrra were very lonely after that and they asked Zeus to create same more people for their sake. Zeus did not accept to satisfy their request, but he advised them to take some stones and throw them behind them. And that is what they did. So, the stones that Deucalion was throwing became men, and the ones that Pyrra was throwing became women. Besides that, which is the ancient greek version of the recreation after the Flood, Pyrra and Deucalion had a son (with the common way this time), and his name was Elleenas (Έλληνας/ means Greek in greek) and he was considered the father of all the greek people.
So the Greek Myths could be understood by Roman people; and so the Greek Myths became a part of the Romans.
