The Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan who found the ocean saw it as very peaceful, or pacifique, which means peaceful in french. The name stuck, and the word ocean...well figure it out.

it means "The Sea that makes Peace". which is very similar to what Magellan called it and much more poetic than what Vasco Núñez de Balboa named it when he discovered it.
