Three reasons:
1. Germany was sinking neutral country's merchant ships.
2. Germany sank the *Lusitania (A British passenger ship with some US passengers) *also check the ships spelling
3. The *Zimmerman's Note (Germany tried to get Mexico to go to war with the US) *check spelling
#3 was the one that eventually got the US into the war against Germany

They were fighting for their freedom and to prove that they were meaningful to their allies
well, it depends on what you think of as "the allies" so the answer is yes because wichever side they joined could be "the allies". but i do know that they went against the Germans like most others so if you percieve the Germans as allies the answer is NO.
