The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC is made of granite. Maya Lin, the designer, chose a very special granite that is found only in Bangalore, India for its special properties.
The granite is black. It has a very fine grain so when the names were etched into it, the edges of the letters would not be ragged. It is an extremely hard granite, so it will last hundreds of years and can be polished to a very reflective finish, to reflect the surroundings and visitors.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial consists of granite that was imported from Bangalore, Karnataka, India, It was erected in remembrance of all the US service members who fought and died in the Vietnam War. There is also an area dedicated to those who are MIA or missing in action.
The Three Soldiers (also known as The Three Servicemen) is a bronze statue on the Washington, DC National Mall commemorating the Vietnam War. The statue, unveiled on Veterans Day, 1984, was designed by Frederick Hart, who placed third in the original design competition
The panels are inscribed with the names of over 58,000 men and women killed or missing during the Vietnam War. 1200 of the names belong to those still missing in action or MIA.
