Advantages
  • wider range of nutrients, particularly micronutrients
  • help increase soil organic matter content
  • relatively inexpensive
  • no (or negligible amounts) of harmful materials such as heavy metals
Disadvantages
  • much lower nutrient density -- requires large amounts to get enough for most crops
  • requires a different type of machine to apply than chemical fertilizers
  • sometimes hard to locate in certain areas
  • odor
