I would make sure that the connections are back on tightly. Sounds like a loose connection. Your battery could also be going bad, but usually this would cause problems starting. There should be a ground connection along with a connector at the alternator. Make sure these are tight. Next check that the cables are connected tightly at the battery. I hope this helps you. It sounds like something else is wrong with your engine, since it's the SES light that's on, not the battery light. Get the code read at Autozone/Advanced Auto.
The regulator is in the engine computer not the alternator.

It turned out to be the alternator going bad. Replaced alternator. No more growling.
Check the voltage at the battery with engine running. It should read 13.5 to 15.5 volts. Any less and the alternator is suspect.
