Blacks throughout the world have always been welcome to be baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church). During the time of slavery in the United States, black slaves had to have permission from their owners to become Mormon, and free blacks had to have legally purchased their freedom (not escaped).
In the 1830's, the Mormon church was moving to the state of Missouri, which was a slave state that was very cruel to free blacks. The Mormon's acceptance of blacks was one of the reasons they were driven from Missouri. It also caused the Mormon missionaries to have trouble with the Ku Klux Klan in the southern states for several decades.
While blacks have always been welcome to join the Church, they have not always been eligible for clergy positions. With a few exceptions, black males were not able to be in the Mormon clergy from the 1850's to 1978.
They only allowed blacks to buy housing in certain areas.
