During the French Indochina War (1946-1954), the French used converted Vietnamese (there was no North and South Vietnam at this time) civilian boats along with donated surplus US Navy landing craft as riverine boats. However, the French did manufacture a single "just for the war in Vietnam" all steel "V" hulled forty footer for their riverine war; called the STCN, a vessel that formed the basis for their RAG units (River Assault Groups).

When the US entered the conflict, close on the heels of the departing French, it was the STCN that inspired US Navy officers to construct the ASPB (Assault Support Patrol Boat)...better known to US Sailors as the Alpha Boat. The ASPB was an all steel, from the drawing room up, riverine boat built in the state of Oregon, USA, specifically for the Vietnam War. Due to it's all steel construction, the Alpha boat was primarily used to "be the point man" heading down (and up) rivers ahead of all other trailing vessels...it's role was for mine sweeping.

The US Navy's Swift Boat (PCF-Patrol Craft Fast) was adapted from the Gulf of Mexico oil drilling rigs that taxied oil workers to and from their oil rigs stationed in the Gulf. The USN tasked Seward Seacraft out of Louisiana to manufacture these vessels, modified to meet the USN standards for fighting riverine warfare in Vietnam. These fifty footers were all aluminum, mounted 3 fifty caliber machineguns and 1 81mm mortar aft, and had a complement of 1 officer and 5 crewmen.

The PBR (Patrol Boat River) was a water jet propelled 32 footer, all fiberglass riverine boat and was built in the state of Washington; this boat was the primary vessel seen in the film "Apocalypse Now."

The Monitor was a 40mm gunned converted WWII Landing Craft Medium (LCM); an all steel vessel that was used as a river battleship on the inland waterways.

The PACV's were Patrol Air Cushioned Vehicles that operated in the Mekong Delta; these boats never touched the water, they moved on a cushion of air. They could skim across mud flats or plant life in the Delta regions.
