The colony of Georgia, founded in 1732, was as a buffer state (or a border), between Spanish Florida and the southern part of the British colonies (South Carolina). General James Oglethorpe hoped that Georgia that would defend the southern part of the colonies from Spanish Florida, as he imagined a province populated by "sturdy farmers" that could guard the border; because of this, the colony's charter prohibited slavery.
In 1732, James Oglethorpe was given a charter from King George II to create a new colony which he would name Georgia. It was located between South Carolina and Florida. It had two main purposes: to serve as a place where debtors in prison could go to start anew and as a barrier against Spanish expansion from Florida.

The Georgia colony served as a buffer between the English colonies and the Spanish ones in Florida and southward. The English also used them to, more or less, claim the land that is now Georgia before the Spanish did.
