The needle of a compass can point to any star you'd like it to. Just flip and turn the compass and the needle will be in different directions, poinling to different stars. But a compass isn't anything to do with stars. Tatyana Martynova

The compass needle always points toward the Earth's magnetic north pole. That's

located in northern Canada, more than 950 miles from the real north pole. There

aren't many places on Earth where the compass actually points toward the Earth's

real, honest north pole.

The Earth's north pole points very close to Polaris ... the "North Star". But compasses

in different parts of the world point in many different directions, and toward many

different places among the stars.

What is a Nautical Star Is it the same as a Compass Rose?

My Guess it is the same thing! The device has 8 Points and is used to show the orientation of North (and other compass points) On a map or nautical chart. The Ground-pounding Army preferred the term (North turning arrow) wanting to eschew Naval jargon. Compass Rose only vaguely resembles a rose. It is very attractive symbol and was also associated with the Intelligence gathering services in Black with White points or numbers. Again I have never heard the term Nautical star-Am Familiar with Compass Rose and North-turning arrow.
