Upper Egypt was the Southern portion, on the banks of the Nile. Lower Egypt was the Northern part, being in and around the Nile delta.
The river Nile flows through a number of countries and it is quite possible that the various peoples that live near the river have particular names for their part of the river bank. Also, the regions the Nile flows through would be identified by the land it cuts through. For example, in Egypt it flows through the Sahara Desert, so in that part its banks could be classed as that. In general, as with any river, the Nile is confined to its course or channel and that is defined by the 'bed' of the river and by its lateral confines which are the 'banks' on either side.
The land around the Nile river is fertile where in land there are more desert lands. Hope this helps all of you!:)
