The short grass prairie of the Western United States receives little rain. For centuries it had been covered with grass. That did not stop people from plowing up the grass and and trying to grow wheat in the dirt they created. In the early 1930s it received even less rain than normal. Not enough plants grew to hold the soil together. When the wind arose, it blew the top layer of soil into the air. That caused the entire area to become filled with a layer of dust. A cold front carried the dirt as far east as the Atlantic Ocean.
