This event is generally taken as the end of the war, though Joseph E. Johnston did not surrender his army to Sherman in North Carolina for about another three weeks.

∙ 10y agoConfederate General Edmund Kirby-Smith negotiated the surrender of the Army of Trans-Mississippi Department with Union General Edward Richard Sprigg Canby on May 26,1865, signing the terms of surrender in Galveston, Texas on June 2,1865. It was the surrender of the last Confederate army still on the field.
