Appomattox Court House was the scene of the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia under Lee, the only substantial Confederate army still in the field.

This event is generally taken as the end of the war, though Joseph E. Johnston did not surrender his army to Sherman in North Carolina for about another three weeks.

Confederate General Edmund Kirby-Smith negotiated the surrender of the Army of Trans-Mississippi Department with Union General Edward Richard Sprigg Canby on May 26,1865, signing the terms of surrender in Galveston, Texas on June 2,1865. It was the surrender of the last Confederate army still on the field.
