Most likely the problem is the sending unit. A good way to verify it is to run an actuator test on the scan tool for the fuel gauge. If the gage goes through its full range then the sending unit is most likely the culprit.
In the gas tank
Your pressure gauge may be broken....If it fluctuates, then you know its not your gauge, but if your gauge always reads 80, it may need to be replaced.
You might plan to refuel when your fuel gauge reads one-eighth of a tank of gasoline. Some people choose to refuel when the gauge reads one-quarter of a tank remaining.
You probably have a faulty fuel gauge sending unit.
Defective fuel sending unit.
when my 94 did it it was the float on the fuel pump. the bad news is the float and pump were not sold seperatly and the pump cost about $120.
fuel gauge not working
Generally the fuel gauge sending unit located in the fuel tank is at fault for incorrect fuel level readings.
Usually the fuel level sensor in the fuel pump. ANSWER A 1993 Ford Explorer also has a 15 amp fuse in location # 17 for the fuel gauge
you should go to a car shop for that one!:)
Simple check is to ground the fuel sending wire at the fuel tank.If the gauge reads FULL then it is a bad fuel sending unit and you need to drop the fuel tank to replace it.If the gauge reads empty when you ground the wiring then it means you have a bad fuel gauge.I would lean strongly towards the sending unit be bad my 87 the gauge started reading about 1/4 tank less before it failed.
The fuel sending unit has probly gone bad in the tank. You have to drop the tank to replace it. If you do this job, make sure to replace your fuel pump too..
