Lord Buddha is not a avatar of god Vishnu. Lord Buddha is the greatest human who reached to the highest level from the mind by practicing different types of meditations and perfections from very longer period even with his previous births as well.
King Asoka was a Jain, after a very critical war when he was standing in the balcony with an impatient mind mind he saw a Nigrodha thero (A follewer of Lord Buddha) walking down the street. He asked from his constable to invite him, then the thero visits and described the teaching of Lord Buddha, King was very happy and became a Buddhist.
Then other thing is after he become a Buddhist he have done a lots of services to Buddhists and he had taken all decisions to protect other religions to follow their teachings freely. Buddhist teaching is not to harm any person, religion, animals etc.
As per my knowledge King Asoka didn't persecute any religion after he became a Buddhist. He has done great services especially for Buddhism and to other religions as well.
