Once the explorers did discover the other regions, they brought with them the seeds of the fruits and vegetables of the area and spread it around Potatoes and corn and tobacco were cultivated by the Aztecs I believe. The shape of S. America & Africa appear as though they could roughly fit together like jigsaw pieces. There are also other land areas which have similar characteristics. People have therefore concluded (probably correctly) that the surface of the Earth was once one large contiguous area.
