Iodine-131
A. Cobalt-60 -Castlearning. Cobalt 60 is diagnosed into the patient due to the thyroid disorder, since cobalt 60 is known for its small radioactivity and short half life the patient would be treated then cured in approximately 25 days. Cobalt 60 is also unique since it is a selected radioisotope with a nuclide and decay mode of alpha(known to treat cancer and in this case thyroid disorder).
A normal study would reveal a thyroid gland of normal size, shape, position, and uniform texture.
By showing an image of the blood circulation in the gland, this study can assess some ambiguous masses in greater detail, to further refine diagnosis
There most likely reason is that there is a mass involving the Thyroid gland in the neck. A very small percentage of nodules/masses are cancer; the best way to make the diagnosis is surgery since needle biopsies might miss the cancer and the [resulting] negative results give a false sense that everything is fine. By removing the entire nodule/mass for the pathology doctor to study, he can study the whole tissue sample and make sure there is no cancer. By far the majority of nodules/masses are benign... meaning no cancer...

Most thyroid ultrasounds are performed to evaluate a small lump (nodule) in the thyroid found during a physical examination or found by a radionuclide study (thyroid scan).
may also be referred to as a thyroid scintiscan. The name of the radioactive substance used may be incorporated and the study called a technetium thyroid scan or an iodine thyroid scan.

If you have Hashimoto's thyroiditis, there are some links between the autoimmune condition and thyroid cancer. One study suggests that Hashimoto's does increase the risk. Meanwhile, another study showed that Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is commonly seen surrounding papillary thyroid cancer.
