The Parthians were the rulers of what would correspond to the Persian kingdom (modern day Iran) at the time of the Roman Empire. Their infantry was the first to be attributed to the technique of turning around in the saddle and firing arrows at an advancing enemy will they were themselves in retreat. Initially it was known as the Parthian shot - it was changed into 'A Parting Shot' when it was inducted into English as a literary term.
