Direct democracy is the term used to describe a system where individuals themselves make governmental policies rather than representatives. Representative democracy is where people elect representatives to make those decisions.
A pure democracy has the people themselves making decisions by majority vote. When representatives of those people are used instead of the people themselves, it is a republican form of government.

A democracy is a form of government where the people govern themselves. There are two different forms of democracy; a (direct)pure or indirect(representative) democracy. For example the United States is a Democracy or more specifically a Representative Democracy. This is where we vote for our representatives that will represent us in our government. Therefore the people do not handle the affairs of the government themselves but vote in representatives that hold their same ideas and values into government to be their voice in governmental issues. In a Indirect or Pure democracy all of the people must vote and have their voice in government. This type is only found in small governmental bodies as it would be illogical in the size of democracies we see today i.e., The United States.
A representative democracy in which the people's elected deputies (representatives), not the people themselves, vote on legislation.
Ancient Greece (specifically, Athens) practiced Direct Democracy. There was no president, nor were there governmental representatives. The people voted directly on the issues themselves rather than having representatives in government.
