It depended on the colony. An example of this was Plymouth colony whose religious views guided everyone from the colony. William Penn established Pennsylvania as a Quaker colony. While Rhode Island was more secular. In most of the colonies to be able to vote a man had to own land and belong to the church. The relationship between church and state in the colonies was very strong. This is one reason why the founders wanted to make sure there was a separation of church and state.
