The sound suddenly quit working on my Dell pc. Do I need a new sound card?

Try reinstalling the driver first. Go to 'my computer'===>system information(on my computer, this option is in the side panel)====> Click the tab marked 'Hardware'===>Click 'Device Manager'===> Click 'Sound, video and game controllers' Look for an option that has something to do with sound. Click the option 'Unistall driver' After the driver is uninstalled, turn off your computer and restart it. After you restart it, you will get a message that your computer has found new hardware. Your computer will reinstall the driver automatically. If this doesn't work, you might need to get a new sound card. Hope this helps. Try reinstalling the driver first. I'm assuming you are using XP. If you vista or some other operating system, I don't know if this will work. I only know that it works with XP. There may be more than one. Some of them can't be uninstalled. Just look through the devices until you find the one that can be uninstalled. On my computer, it is labeled 'Realtek AC'97 Audio. Yours will probably say something different since you have a Dell. 7 Click 'Uninstall' 8 After uninstalling, turn off your computer and then turn it back on. 9 when you turn your computer back on, you will get a message that says your computer has found new hardware. The driver will be reinstalled automatically. If you still don't have sound after this, then you might think about getting a new sound card.
