As sound travels through the cochlea the memrane vibrates and causes waves. As the membrane moves it presses up against another membrane called the tectoral membrane that in turn is next to hair fibers. As the membranes moves it presses down on the hair fibers and we hear sound. The greater amplitude of the wave the louder the noise because the membrane is pressing hard against those hair fibers. This is the reason why continuous loud noise is not good for your hearing because those hair fibers can break. Once those hair fibers are not sending the correct signal to the brain, you can have hearing loss.
