Until now, north Indiawas regarded as the main centre of sugar industry.Uttar Pradesh alone accounts for half of the sugar mills of India. But recently, there is a tendency to shift the sugar industry towards South India. It is primarily due to following reasons:
- It has been found by experiments that sugarcane produced in the south has more sugar content than the sugarcane produced in the north.
- Sugar is a seasonal industry which can be run better in the co-operative sector rather than in the private sector. It is a known fact that the co-operative movement has proved more successful in the south than in the north.
- Many states of the south like Maharashtra, Andhra pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have recently begun to pay more attention to the cultivation of sugarcane.
- Sugar is also an export-item and helps in earning the foreign exchange. South has better port facilities for exports as compared to the north.
