Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in 1793. Since it made cotton processing much easier, the production of cotton goods boomed. In the south before the civil war, the agricultural industry became the largest industry. Slavery also greatly increased because people saw that slaves could make them a large amount of money through cotton picking. In a way, the cotton gin helped cause the civil war.
It made cotton production in the US more profitable, and ended up increasing the market for slaves. This drove up the value of slaves and ended up in more slavery.
