This problem doesn't really relate to a gateway, online or off-line. The address conflict occurs when two or more systems on the network have the same static address in their adaptor. IP addresses on the LAN must be unique, and if you aren't using DHCP this happens easily.

10.35.88.12How could the default gateway be the workstations IP address? the default gateway would be the first available IP address in this case 10.35.88.1 it would have to go through your default gateway to get to his default gateway and be sent to his workstation.
Yes. You need to have an IP (either static or dynamic) You must have a subnet mask that corresponds to the IP address; and a gateway IP address that is on the same subnet.
Since this appears to be in the Verizon IP range it would be safe to assume they are your internet provider. You would need to contact them to ask what the default gateway address would be. If you are not using a static IP address the gateway IP should be provided by DHCP along with the other IP configuration information.
The gateway address is your router's inside local address. To find what your gateway and IP are you can open a Command Prompt (CMD) window and type "ipconfig/all" without quotes. Make sure you run the Command Prompt as an administrator when you open it.
There are a few possibilities. A successful ping indicates that you have a physical connection established, that you have a data link device in working order, and you have the IP protocol installed and configured. If you are missing any one of these the ping will fail. If you fail to get a reply from the gateway, it may simply indicate that the gateway is configured not to reply to ICMP echo requests and that nothing is wrong. You can also fail to receive replies from the gateway due to an ARP conflict (or MAC address conflict) between your system or the gateway and another system on the network.
What is the default subnet mask for an IP address of 198.133.219.4?
No, it is not. A destination IP address may be any address, usually on a completely different network. The default gateway address is used to determine where to send packets that need to be routed outside of the current local area network.
Ip address is 10.0.1.0 Gateway is 10.0.1.254 if not Try this update 01/30/2014 IP Address: 10.0.1.28 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Default Gateway: 10.0.1.254
IPCONFIG. Then look under 'Default Gateway' for your IP address.
Subnet mask is a mask used to determine what subnet an IP address belongs to. Default gateway is the gateway in a network that a computer will use to access another network if a gateway is not specified for use.
