This is too cool if the engine had been running for awhile. Thermostat is stuck open which causes the system to stay in closed loop, thus setting the check engine light. Drain and flush the radiator, and replace the thermostat. You may have the have the Check Engine Light reset with an OBD2 scan tool. Ask an auto parts store to reset it after selling you the thermostat and antifreeze for the repair.
Operating temperature with a good thermostat will be between 180 and 200 degrees. The ideal running temperature on a 6 cylinder engine is about 196 degrees Fahrenheit.

The thermostat opens at 195 degrees and the temperature will rise to 232 to 235 degrees before the cooling fan comes on to cool it down.
Yes, that is about what it should be with a 195 degree thermostat installed. Check your radiator for debris on the outside or it may be partially clogged.
You did not mention the engine size. Regardless, it is in the thermostat housing on the intake manifold.
If you follow the upper radiator hose to the engine, the hose is attached to the thermostst housing. The thermostat is located under the thermostat housing.
That should be controlled by the thermostat. If you have a 180 Degree thermostat the engine should operate right near 180 degrees. If it's a 195... you get the idea. If the engine is running too warm, check the coolant level, thermostat, radiator and water pump... pretty much in that order.
Changing the thermostat on a 2002 Chevrolet 4.8 liter engine is simple to do. First, follow the upper radiator hose to the thermostat. Then drain the radiator hose. After the hose is drained, remove the clamps and bolts holding the thermostat housing in place. Then remove the old thermostat and replace with a new one.
Should be in a removable housing at the engine end of the upper radiator hose
The coolant temperature sensor, on a 2005 Chevrolet trailblazer 4.2 liter engine, is located just above the thermostat housing. The thermostat housing is located in the front of the engine.
It is in the thermostat housing at the end of the top radiator hose on the engine side.
Many of the engines sensors do not operate until the engine has reached running temperature (195 degrees F). Without the thermostat the engine won't reach that mark. It may also trigger the check engine light to illuminate.
