we need to change out the thermostat on a 1996 VW 2.4 diesel engine Transporter and we need the schematic for it; where is the darned thing and how do you get it out to change it
The thermostat on this particular vehicle is located on the right side of the engine. It is on the back of the engine block so use caution if you need to change it.

Well it depends on the type of engine you have, but that only has to do with the thermostat's location. The Haynes GM manual #38025 has instructions on how to change the thermostat in section 3-3. Amazon has copies of it dirt cheap.
the thermostat on my 96 is on the bottom side of the water pump. as you face the engine it is on the left side. the large hose that goes to the water pump will attach to the housing of the thermostat. make sure to replace o ring gasket when you change it. it will take some work but it is not as bad as it looks.
The thermostat will be inside of the thermostat housing. They thermostat housing can be found on the front of the engine.
Where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine, you will find the thermostat at that location.

Follow the lower radiator hose to the engine, the thermostat is under the housing that the hose hooks to.
What size engine? The 2.7 L is a pain to do because of its location. The other engines are fairly easy.
The thermostat is located where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine.
Look where the upper radiator hose connects to the engine. You will find the thermostat housing near that location. The thermostat may be inside the housing where the hose connects.
