If you really like the guy and are busy then when he asks you out you should be saying something like, 'I'm sorry but I'm busy that day, but how about this Saturday?' You could pick any day of the week to go out with him, but at least he knows you are interested in him. You obviously didn't communicate well with him and he felt rejected and moved on. It's possible he still likes you so if you see him or have his phone # then please call him and tell him you apologize for not explaining why you were so busy, but you would certainly like to go out with him.
